Abstract

With a quarter of 16-24 year old Australians experiencing a mental health disorder and strong indicators that rates of these disorders are rising among young Australians, it is vital to address youth mental health and wellbeing. Family connectedness is known to be a key factor for youth wellbeing, but there is little detail about how young people experience it. Understanding the perspectives of young people is essential to help families connect and support the wellbeing of young people. This thesis aims to fill this gap in the understanding of family connectedness by qualitatively exploring young people’s experiences. The study adopts a childhood studies lens to capture the perspectives of young people, which differ from adult viewpoints, and brings a social work perspective to this area of research.
