Abstract | Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) participation in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) has been receiving increasing public attention in recent years. The ADF’s Diversity and Inclusion Strategy actively targets LGBTI people for recruitment and there have been Defence Force Recruiting advertisements in the LGBTI press and at LGBTI events. Since 2013, Defence members have been marching in Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in uniform, and on Anzac Day in 2015 current and former Defence members laid wreaths to fallen LGBTI servicewomen and men. Yet, little has actually been written about Australia’s LGBTI defence history, until now being limited to a few journal articles and book chapters. |
