Abstract | [Extract] The authors undertook a quick survey of those newly arrived in Sydney and other parts of Australia. Many settlement workers interviewed in this context stated that members of the Bhutanese community always express their capability and willingness to do some work rather than stay at home and do nothing and simply live on social security benefits that come from Centrelink, the main agency in Australia that provides welfare and unemployment payments. These settlement workers who work in agencies and who have been seeing waves of refugees coming into Australia made this statement on the basis of comparison with previous groups of refugees. We will begin by discussing our findings among the elderly Bhutanese refugees. |
