Abstract | [Extract] In this chapter we present a comparative view of the systems of resettlement in Australia and the United States. We review the current settlement planning in both countries. Predominant policy directions, rural versus urban resettlement, secondary migration, and psychosocial well-being are some of the variables that we have taken into account for comparison. We also look at some of the ways in which these differences, tied to ideologies and policies, can impact the resettlement process. As this chapter and the previous one on cross-cultural competencies are focused significantly on human services and social work practice, the analysis draws conclusions on implications for the helping professions. |
