Description | Lament is a setting of an English translation of the first poem from Boethius’ Consolation of Philosopher and is written for tenor and three instruments. The piece is a study in the synthesis of divergent musical styles: minimalist processes are used in tandem with extended tonal resource while intricate counterpoint is presented using timbrel combinations not typically associated with polyphonic writing. The piece represents a fusing, rather than a juxtaposition of these ideas and the end result is one where style itself becomes an agent of word painting. |
