Abstract

More than a hundred icons of biblical scenes are elegantly arranged along the walls of the Cathedral Church of Mary of the Assumption in Tbilisi, Georgia, in Eastern Europe. Thirty of these richly painted icons, which tell the story of the life of Jesus, are reproduced in this book together with the relevant biblical text and a commentary written by Francis J. Moloney SDB. Carefully chosen extracts from early Church Fathers shed further light on each of the events portrayed in the icons. Beautifully presented, this hardbound full-colour book is ideal for meditation and reflection, and will make an excellent gift. The publication of these icons, rarely seen by Christians of the West, witnesses to the richness of the sacred tradition of the universal Church. "I pray that as you turn the pages of this book, or maybe one day visit our Church in Tbilisi where the icons are gathered, you will be able to perceive the divine Presence who gazes upon you and calls you by name, who loves you and seeks to transform you", Giuseppe Pasotto, Apostolic Administrator of the Caucusus for the Latins.
