Abstract

A report on the 2009 survey of Catholic Religious Institutes in Australia by Stephen Reid, Bob Dixon and Noel Connolly.

In 2009, the National Council of Catholic Religious Australia (CRA) commissioned the ACBC Pastoral Projects Office (PPO) to design a survey to send to all Institutes of Clerical Religious, Religious Brothers and Religious Sisters in Australia. It was the first major study of Catholic religious in Australia since 1976. The Council commissioned the work to get a picture of the membership at the present time, to consider trends for the future and to understand more fully the important role that Catholic religious play in the Australian Church and society.

The main body of this report presents and discusses the data from the 2009 survey. Part 1 of the survey deals with questions of membership: numbers, age and geographic distribution, vocations and deaths, and the variety of birthplaces and apostolates. Part 2 is concerned with organisational change, the ownership and operation of institutions, the management of transition, and partnerships with other congregations and other Catholic and non-Catholic agencies.
