Abstract

As health care simulation continues to mature, the literature has shifted from descriptive narratives about “doing” simulation towards a greater focus on the scholarship of simulation practice. In essence, there has been a shift from viewing simulation as a technology to a pedagogy. At the same time, there has been increasing attention to what defines excellence, quality, and sustainability of simulation practice. This article presents a comprehensive overview of educational principles and practices for simulation derived from contemporary health care and education literature, framed using the mnemonic simulation. This article complements existing work into quality indicators and standards and will be relevant to a range of health care disciplines.
