Abstract | The chapter begins with a discussion of Murdoch’s preference for attention to detail over general moral theory. An example of heroic action is then provided to facilitate such attention, and it is discussed in the light of utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, and virtue ethics. Problems with each approach are explained against the background of Murdoch’s emphasis on the importance of nobility or moral value, and the chapter concludes that a central issue in philosophical ethics must be whether the appearance of such value is veridical. |
