Abstract

This collection comprises of data collected from 130 preservice teachers in their third year of a four-year Bachelor of Education Primary degree. Preservice teachers participated as tutors in a community-based homework program as part of their compulsory professional experience unit over 24 weeks.

This study of the value of community engagement in a preservice teacher education program was conducted in 2009 and 2010. Service learning experiences were integrated into the third year of a four-year Bachelor of Education (Primary) course at an Australian tertiary institution as a compulsory component of the Professional Experience Program for a total of 70 hours over the entire academic year. The 2009 participating cohort comprised of B.Ed (Primary) third year students enrolled in the community engagement (PEP) unit. The 2010 participating cohort comprised of B.Ed (Primary), B.Ed (Early Childhood) and B.Teach/B.A third year students enrolled in the community engagement (PEP) unit.
