Abstract

Presents the findings of a study involving 11 4-year-old early readers with reading ages three to nine years above their chronological age. Discusses assessment of precocious reading ability, the assessment viewpoints of researchers, parents and teachers, and assessment tools. Discusses how social scaffolding and self-scaffolding are demonstrated within the learning of precocious readers. Offers recommendations for practice.
