Abstract | In previous studies I have drawn attention to the place of martyrs in the preaching and thought of Severus of Antioch. Indeed, there is a preponderance of homilies on martyrs. In the present chapter Severus’ treatment of Stephen, Thallelaius, Sergius and Bacchus, and the trio Tarachus, Probus, and Andronicus will be examined. A concomitant consideration will be the extent to which these homilies evince Severus’ use of martyrial passiones and acta. |
