Abstract | The (sole) aim of this chapter is to initiate a discussion about the proposal that applied cognitive gerontology should take the applied character of the constructs under investigation even more seriously in order to not miss important aspects of age-related performance in cognitive functions such as planning or prospective memory. In the authors' view, applied aspects of cognitive research (in gerontology) are not to be used only for matters of justification of basic research or as tests of generalizability or ecological validity of basic research. The authors review data that we believe show that using more applied material in the laboratory and/or testing performance in real life may reveal novel and important aspects of the phenomena studied that would be missed otherwise. |
