Abstract | Less than two decades after the country joined the United Nations in 1971, the Royal Government of Bhutan deliberately began a regime of insensitive and inhumane treatment of one section of its people—the Lhotsampa. Numbering around 156,000, the Lhotsampa mainly followed the Hindu belief system, and lived in the foothills of the entire length of southern Bhutan. Despite being Bhutanese citizens, they suffered continuously under the repressive regime from 1988 onward. |
