Abstract | [Extract] Although mechanical ventilation is a useful tool to control the work of breathing and optimize oxygenation in critically ill patients, complications can occur. Potential hazards are related to the presence of an artificial airway and the mechanics of ventilation itself. However, the risks imposed by mechanical ventilation can be mitigated if nurses use strategies that promote early but appropriate reduction of ventilatory support and timely extubation. |
