Abstract | This article argues, based on internal evidence, that Epistula 8 by Maximus the Confessor, traditionally understood as a unified letter, is best understood as a composite of two documents, a longer letter and a shorter fragment. As a result, questions of dating and historical context, including the relationship between Maximus’s reference to the Septuagint phrase 'wolves of Arabia' and the nascent Islamic invasions, are reconsidered. |
