[Extract] Though much has changed since Roger Dale wrote The State and Education Policy in 1989, in terms of empirical changes in the world of education policy and theoretical and methodological developments in policy sociology in education, and while the nation state has been destabilised by the processes of globalisation through the enhanced significance in the policy cycle of supranational and international bodies, and regional associations, to Roger Dale, we believe, the restructured state nevertheless remains significant in politics and policy production in education. Accordingly, while he is aware of recent accounts of the post-bureaucratic state and has sought to understand new modes of educational governance, including the impact of new public management and subsequently network governance, he continues to attach considerable importance to the necessity of theorising the state for understanding educational policy processes.
