Abstract | [Extract] Jesus is one of the important prophets, ulū l-ʿaẓm,¹ in Islamic tradition. He is frequently referred to in both essential Islamic sources, the adab genre and Muslim literatures in general. While the Qur’an draws attention to his humanity,² it constantly brings his prophethood to the fore.³ The Qur’an puts great stress on his miraculous birth⁴ and departure from the world.⁵ Similarly, it describes various miracles he performed by the permission of God, in an eloquent and unique style. He is referred to in the Qur’an, which gives his name and attributes, in 15 sūras and more than 90 verses. |
