Abstract

Within Catholic education, it is commonly understood that teaching is regarded as a vocation and the extent to which a Catholic school achieves its mission depends primarily on the teachers dedicated to this apostolate. Catholic schools throughout Australia have a long history of supporting teachers who are committed both formally and informally to their own formation for mission. In recent times, concerns within Catholic education have emphasised the need for ongoing systematic formation opportunities that are meaningful and accessible to all teachers in Catholic schools. This chapter envisions that accessibility to ongoing spiritual direction for all teachers in Catholic schools is vital when historical circumstances within and beyond Australia are considered along with current insights pertaining to the make-up of teachers populating Catholic schools.
