Abstract | This chapter examines the extraordinary regeneration of the regional city of Geelong in Victoria, Australia, a deindustrialising city that had languished in the 1990s as manufacturing industries closed down. In response to this crisis, local regional development agencies worked closely with the federal and state governments to craft and implement a series of redevelopment plans that injected millions of dollars into the area and reversed the trajectory of change. The new economic direction of the city relies on government services, construction, and population growth, which together are transforming Geelong into a satellite dormitory suburb of the adjacent 'global city' of Melbourne. |
