Abstract | [Extract] Every day we see and hear variety. Variety is good and brings us into touch with a diversity of opinions, places, people, and life journeys. When I think of the wonderful ways my life has diverged from the assumed plan (including 20 years living in Asia), these have inevitably been spurred by contact with something new, and often something that places me outside my comfort zone. But when might difference be viewed as a threat or challenge? Who draws the line between ‘normal’ and ‘too different’? As humans we define ourselves in terms of what is different to us and our collective norms and values. Part of this is to engage in ‘othering’ or the assumption that a person or group of people pose a threat due to difference. Society places barriers for people with difference, and this has always been the case for students with disability in our schools. |
