Abstract | [Extract] This essay argues that the idea of Christian holy war and the idea of crusade as a means of extending the frontiers of Christendom fell on fertile ground in Poland because its rulers, the Piast dynasty, embraced these policies as legitimising actions to both protect themselves from the encroachment of neighbours and to justify and ennoble the expansion of their dominions north and east. |
