| Description | “Meet You in the Middle of the Air” constitutes the recording and performance of themes proper to theology. It extends the focus of theological aesthetics from the verbal, and representational arts to the specific symbolic form that is musicking (Small, 1998), and enacts the broadening of intelligences (Gardner, 1993) from the theoretical to the artistic/aesthetic within the field of theology; a discipline which, somewhat uncritically, has adopted a mainly discursive mode of investigation despite the long-term connection between the arts, theology and philosophy. Drawing on an understanding of theology as “faith seeking understanding” to bridge between religion and the cultures it inhabits (St Anselm and Bernard Lonergan) within a methodological approach to theology structured around a subdivision of activities (functional specialities) rather than themes or doctrine, music-making is understood as an act of “Foundations” that can “objectify” aspects of Christian doctrine not usually accessed through theory. The work was performed at various international theological conferences. “Meet You in the Middle of the Air” is also referred to as part of the chapter "Knowlege of Truth" in Maeve Heaney's book 'Suspended God: Music and a Theology of Doubt' (2022). |
