Abstract | A number of social and cultural expectations can heavily influence pregnancy and birth experiences, which underpin the worldview for women. Women centred care is a philosophy that underpins midwifery practice and appropriate social support is considered a vital component of this (Fahy, 2012). Unfortunately, pregnant women can be found guilty of crime and sentenced to periods of detention, only leaving the correctional facility for antenatal appointments, and to birth. Furthermore, due to the strict protocols surrounding incarceration, pregnant women are unable to rely upon the support of their partner, family or friends during the antenatal, birth or postnatal periods. |
