Abstract | Joseph Hall’s rhetorical question, ‘What Schole-boy, what apprentice knows not HELIODORVS?’, is often taken at face value, as a definitive encapsulation of the Aethiopica ’s status in early modern England. 1 We notice that the vectors of this supposed knowledge are both horizontal (ubiquitous) and vertical (transcending or defying the norms of age and education, occupation and class). But when we look at the context of the question, Hall’s The honor of the married clergie (1620), some of those certainties begin to dissolve. Hall’s invocation of Heliodorus is polemical, part of a wider debate over the merits and demerits of a celibate priesthood. |
