Abstract | Self-concept, an individual’s perception of themselves, formed through their experiences and interactions with their environment, is a critical construct in the psychological literature. Positive self-concepts and related self-beliefs lead to improvements in educational, social, and emotional outcomes, as well as in daily life, more generally. In this chapter, we argue that self-concept is a crucial construct in the positive psychology movement—a movement that focuses on how healthy individuals can get the most from life. Specifically, we outline what self-concept is, explain why it is essential, illustrate its multidimensional nature and how it is formed (via temporal, social, and dimensional processes), and, lastly, describe how it differs from the construct of self-efficacy. The chapter draws heavily from the educational psychology literature, therefore focusing on academic self-concept, with a particular emphasis on meta-analyses and cross-cultural studies. |
