Abstract | This chapter will present empirical data from a research project that developed and trialled a new assessment tool, a Planning and Assessment Matrix (PAM), that early childhood teachers can use to study the process of development. PAM takes a different approach to other interpretive assessment models, as it helps teachers identify the actual and potential levels of a child’s development, by applying the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) concept. PAM relies on the identification of these two levels of development, to guide teachers in the creation of developmental conditions that support the child’s potential level of development to become the new actual level of development. PAM supports teachers by enabling them study the internal dynamics of development and offers the educational field an interactive alternative assessment methodology. This new perspective guides teachers not to focus on what children have already achieved, but to focus on the next steps in their potential developmental trajectory. |
