Abstract

Language teachers have long been aware of the benefits of using authentic materials in their classes (Nunan, 1989). However, for students of English for Academic Purposes
(EAP), authentic materials are the peer-reviewed articles and textbooks of their future disciplines and are often considered too lengthy and difficult for language students. Another complication is that the students in an EAP class may be intending to enter different subject areas. As a result, EAP reading skills are usually practised on shorter, simplified texts about general interest topics. Unfortunately, reading only modified texts may leave students with insufficient reading skills to successfully support writing in their disciplines (Rose & Martin, 2012). Another important, but often overlooked consideration, is that 21st century students need to be comfortable reading in digital form. Even textbooks are often purchased in digital form and a student budget is
unlikely to support the printing of all the required readings.
