Abstract

News about the current state of Creation is frightening and unnerving. But the climate crisis is the result of our view of Creation as a frightening and violent place over which humans must triumph - a view that has meant we no longer see our non-human relatives as co-creators. During the recent COVID-19 lockdown there were lots of stories about animals coming into the cities and roaming. This seemed to create panic, as animals are to be feared and subdued - after all, didn't God gave dominion and power to humans? But what if we were to re-examine this idea of dominion and ask how it has led us into unequal and disconnected paths that have us worrying about whether God's Creation will last the next few generations of human and non-human existence? What if we revisited our role within Creation, looking towards the text of Genesis and others within the Hebrew Scriptures/Old Testament to encourage us and give us a direction that doesn't necessarily set us apart from Creation or reinforce our superiority?
