Fear in indigenous literatures of the global south : The poetry of Graciela Huinao and Ellen van Neerven

The literatures of Australia and South America—belonging to what J.M. Coetzee termed the literatures of the global South—are affectively marked and brought into proximity by the history of European imperialism, and the fears, both historical and contemporary, that it originated. Two indigenous writers of Australia and Chile, Mapuche poet, Graciela Huinao, and Ellen van Neerven, a poet of Mununjali Yugambeh ancestry, demonstrate fear's paradoxical productivity. In this chapter, I will explore the rhetorical, epistemic, and temporal dimensions of fear within the poetry of Huinao and van Neerven, as it confronts readers with representations of indigenous history and experiences which differ from those taught or encountered—in particular, the periodization of a cosmopolitan modernity—against which readers must reposition themselves.
