Abstract | This chapter considers Bourdieu’s ‘thinking tools’ and research disposition and their implications for educational research. We note his stress on the intimate imbrications of theory and data – he speaks of research as ‘fieldwork in philosophy’ – and his relational account of the social arrangement. Reflexive consideration of researcher positionality is central to Bourdieu’s research methodologies. Here he rejects any possibility of ‘epistemological innocence’ in social science research. The chapter considers the reception of Bourdieu’s work in the English speaking world and in education, noting the significance of his chapters in Young’s 1971 collection, Knowledge and control: New directions for the sociology of education, and the book with Passeron, Reproduction in education, society and culture, first published in English in 1970, for the taking up of his work in Anglophone sociology of education. Bourdieu’s central thinking tools are outlined: Habitus, capitals and fields and considered as couplets, namely, habitus/practice and capitals/fields. An argument is also proffered about why Bourdieu’s oeuvre remains relevant today in the sociology of education. |
