Abstract
[Extract] One of few theologians to have been awarded the prestigious Erasmus Prize (1982) for his contributions to European culture, Edward Schillebeeckx is without doubt one of the most important Christian thinkers of the twentieth century. His contribution to the Catholic Church especially during and also following the Second Vatican Council turned him from being a professor of theology in a Dutch university into “an international theologian’s theologian.”1 Despite having authored volumes on theological disciplines as diverse as God, Christ, Church, revelation, sacraments, Eucharist, priesthood, celibacy, Mary and spirituality, he did not write a specific treatise on theological anthropology. Instead, his whole corpus of works reveals how he thinks about God and God’s relationship with humans, what it means to be fully human, the nature of human experience and the very mystery of humanity itself.
