Abstract
What is populism? In this interview, Benjamin Moffitt sets out three main approaches to populism: the ideational approach, the strategic approach, and the discursive-performative approach. Explaining in what way these three approaches are similar and to what extent they differ, this interview offers examples of right-wing and left-wing populism in Europe, Latin America and Australia. Moffitt also discusses the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the success of nationalist policies as well as international populism. Finally, on the tension between populism and liberal values Moffitt argues that populist discourses are not necessarily against liberalism but that populists of all ideological stripes are clearly illiberal is when it comes to institutions.
