Abstract
[Extract] ‘The purpose of research is to give voice to the NP position. When there is no voice then one gets removed from the debate’ (Della, 2007, personal communication). Confusion exists about the difference between research and audit (Bull, 1993). As methods of quality assessment, both research and audit have a valued place in the evaluation of nurse practitioner services. The key factor is determining when to undertake research and when to undertake audit. The decision about the most appropriate method of evaluation to use is determined by the clinical question and a thorough understanding of both types of evaluation methods, which are outlined more fully below.
