Abstract
The Human Rights Convention is an intensive Interdisciplinary Program designed for Year 8 students at Carey Baptist Grammar School. The program runs for five days and is designed to provide students with an understanding of fundamental human rights, as outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and to become aware of current and historical human rights issues both internationally and in Australia. Ideally, the program raises students' awareness of human rights issues and also empowers them to be able to contribute positively to protect human rights in the world and in their own school. The program aims to provide students with: an understanding of the principles of human rights an awareness of human rights abuses (largely current issues, but including some historical issues) on the international stage an awareness of current human rights concerns in Australia an appreciation for organisations which are formed to defend human rights a knowledge of how to participate in movements which defend human rights the ability to identify bullying and discrimination in terms of violations of human rights an active sympathy for human rights, locally and internationally an awareness that the actions of an individual effect the human rights of others
