Abstract
In “Response to Machery”, Margot Strohminger and Juhani Yli-Vakkuri assess Edouard Machery’s critique of the method of cases (the usage of thought experiments in philosophy) in view of his research in experimental philosophy. They argue that Machery’s criticism itself is modally immodest, and therefore self-defeating. Also, they point out that modal modesty or immodesty does not depend on the usage of the method of cases, given that certain philosophical views are modally modest, yet counterintuitive and do not rely upon the method of cases.
