Abstract
[Extract] The Second Varitcan Council (1962-65) instigated significant changes in the way the Catholic Church saw itself with regard to other religions and the secular world, and made significant changes in the internal life of the church: both the internal and external changes transformed the mission of the church. When we look back on the changes within the Catholic Church from Vatican II we tend to focus on liturgy, and particularly the change to the vernacular, but other significant changes and movements within Catholic education, and religious education, in particular were mooted. This chapter examines some of the shifts which have taken place in religious education as a result of Vatican II and analyses some of the significant documents related to religious education published since the council to map the changes in religious education over the past fifty years.
