Abstract
The problem of misdiagnosis is becoming increasingly apparent in Malaysia. Problems of misdiagnosis centre around issues of unsystematic testing and lack of comprehensive data collection. 95 children aged 3½ to 15 years old who were diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Speech and Language Delay were surveyed to find out whether ability and behavioural patterns could be identified using different psychological tests. The researchers found that comprehensive testing which includes information from parents, teachers and the child are important when differentiating the two disorders. Speech and Language Delay children were found to have low Verbal IQ and Communication abilities but less behavioural problems while ADHD children tend to have normal Verbal and Performance IQ but more problems of Impulsivity, Learning and Hyperactive behaviours.
