Abstract
[Extract] In this paper I will survey the political background to and the provisions of the Treaty of Kraków. The crisis which led to the negotiation and signing of the Treaty was precipitated when the Order’s head, Albert of Brandenburg-Ansbach converted to Lu- theranism, becoming the first hereditary Duke in Prussia and the Polfirst state outside the Holy Roman Empire to adopt the Protestant confession. The Treaty set the foundation for the establishment of a secular duchy in Prussia and disbanded the administration of the Teutonic Order. The dissolution of the crusader state in Prussia was a result of number of factors: the changing realities of the geopolitical situation in north central Europe, the evolution of Prussian society, ongoing conflict with the Polish monarchy, and the personal ambitions of the 37th Grand Master. Together these culminated in a coup, Albert’s negotiation and the signing of the Treaty of Kraków.
