Abstract
[Extract] Marco Alisdar is new to the teaching profession. In 2 months he will be teaching preschoolers. Like Isaac Assimov in the opening quote, he likes to write and plans to make writing an integral part of his class. Unfortunately, he is not sure how to make this happen. None of his college courses provided information on how to teach writing to very young children.
Celia Bowen teaches first grade. She is a 5-year classroom veteran and, by all accounts, a very good teacher. Just ask her principal; he claims that she is the best teacher in the school. Despite her success, Ms. Bowen is concerned about writing. Her students rarely write, and she devotes little to no time teaching this critical skill. Her state adopted the Common Core State Standards, and she realizes she will need to make writing an integral part of her class next year.
