Abstract
I hate you when mummy's here and I love you when she's not". Catherine Bell's experience as a nanny crushed her romantic perception of the profession, that had been magically ingrained from childhood films such as Mary Poppins. The artist, wearing chainmail creates a real and symbolic barrier to intimacy, piglets replace babies in scenes of nursing, shaving and washing. There is a dark undercurrent in each scene - it is no accident that the chainmail is that of the slaughter house. The work creates an insightful exploration of normalcy and deviance in relation to the position of care givers in our society. This Little Piggy... Fades to Pink explores the taboos of motherhood and the strangely detached relationships that can develop out of convenience.
