Abstract
Indonesia continues to experience Islamic resurgence, with Islam developing increasing social, economic and political influence. Looking at the global Islamic resurgence, Hefner (2011: 1) argues that it ‘gives rise to a more politically ambitious development: calls for the state to apply a uniform and codified version of shari’a or Islamic law to all Muslim citizens’. It is certainly true that Islamic political parties and religious organisations in Indonesia, many of which were established in the wake of the 1999 political reforms, have worked to advance their agenda of returning Muslims to live according to Islamic values based on the Qur’an and Sunna, as they interpret them.
