Abstract
As the apostolic Church pondered the mystery of Christ, it also inevitably pondered the mystery of the divine motherhood of Mary. Most of this foundational theology was done in the Christian East. This essay attempts to outline the Eastern Christian approach to Mary the Mother of God and to identify the foundational approach to Eastern mariology by examining an iconographical symbol which first appeared in the Protevangelium of James. This symbol will become the foundation for the icon of the Protection of the Virgin, or the Protecting Veil.
