Abstract
Chapter 19 discusses the gender discrimination experienced by women in key social systems in Asian society. In Asian politics, this gender discrimination is not apparent, as Asia leads globally in terms of the number of years women have governed as heads of state. Scratching the surface will show, however, that these women leaders only wielded political power due to their being members of prominent political families, rising to power merely as heirs to male dynasties. In economics, women have been increasingly participating in the labor force due to economic globalization. However, developments in the global labor market continue to undermine the advancements gained by women. Christianity plays the role of a double-edged sword here by reinforcing the oppression of Asian women and simultaneously aiding in their liberation.
