Abstract
The closure of Australia's most iconic and prolific bookselling chain, Angus & Robertson, reduced access to bricks-and-mortar bookstores for many readers. This paper examines the attempted importation of supermarket retail strategies into the relationship between the A&R group and publishers. The Tower Books affair began as a demand to publishers from the retailer for up-front fees for their product to be stocked. This caused a public controversy which counterposed commercial power with 'soft' cultural power.
