The law of hospitality

Abstract
This final chapter examines moral arguments about accepting migrants as citizens or residents in terms of hospitality and generosity to outsiders. Through historical and anthropological research, the chapter examines the ‘law of hospitality’ where the hearth and the fire are the centre of the household. In this ambiguous idea of reciprocity, the guest could be a threat or an asset. With the development of citizenship for cash, these guests are no longer connected to us by rituals, traditions, and beliefs. Although scholars such as Joseph Carens have examined the ethics of immigration, modern governments are swayed by what the electorate wants. Given the decline in fertility rates and the ageing of populations, modern migrants can be seen as a demographic asset.
