Abstract
[Extract] Sustainable HRM seeks to develop and implement policies designed to achieve objectives in three pillars of sustainable development or the triple bottom line approach which include economic/financial, human/social and environmental aspects. It challenges the strategic HRM paradigm which has dominated the rhetoric of HRM since the 1990s. The strategic HRM paradigm emphasises the use of HR for the achievement of economic (e.g. financial) outcomes for organisations. During the last couple of decades the roles of HR professionals required to further strategic HRM and achieve economic objectives have been well developed and have changed in response to the emerging economic and technological contexts. However, during this period, there has also been an increasing awareness of the negative impacts of work organisations on individuals, families, communities, the natural environment and the economy while organisations pursue their business strategies with the primary focus to improve financial performances.
