Abstract
During the Carolingian era, Old Testament models, interpreted as “types” of future things, informed an ideology of nationhood and kingship, beginning after Charlemagne announced a program of moral renewal in the Admonitio generalis of 789, if not before. The role of the Church in the organization of an expanded Frankish empire, and the work of acculturation, relying as it did on bishops, abbots, and lay scholars adept at typological exegesis, further elevated the importance of allegory. Allegory allowed Carolingians to consider themselves as biblical characters fulfilling a divine purpose, a purpose foreshadowed in ancient Israel and culminating in the future reign of Christ.
