Abstract
The honorandus of this volume and his collaborators have long and intensively been concerned with the topic of church and emperor, particularly during the Arian controversy. In homage to Professor Brennecke's erudite scholarship I consider here the position of church and emperor in the early sixth century, concentrating on the correspondence of Hormisdas, bishop of Rome, in his negotiations with the emperor in Constantinople. Firstly I give the background to Hormisdas' reign, then investigate the two Roman embassies he sent to the East, before evaluating the relevance to this later period of the opinions expressed by H. Berkhof seventy years ago on the topic of De Kerk en de Keizer, a book which provided one of the starting-points for this Festschrift.
