Investigating the nature of the student experience online: Social engagement factors

Abstract
An examination of the literature on computer-mediated communication suggests that there are a variety of frameworks and approaches on how to foster positive learning experiences through online delivery. While there are many frameworks that emphasise the cognitive aspects of learning, socio-affective aspects are of equal importance in creating a positive learning experience for students. The paper integrates two framework that balance cognitive and social aspects of learning. The first is the notion of an online knowledge building community and the second area derives from social presence theory emphasizing interpersonal and social strategies that reduce psychological and physical distance between teachers and students. By synthesizing findings from both areas of research, this paper provides a framework and a set of strategies that can be used to create a supportive learning climate.
